A small-scale test demonstrates the feasibility of hygrothermal behavior evaluation of the wall with ply-lam CLT by numerical simulation.
In this study, the ply-lam CLT with plywood was prepared, and its hygrothermal properties including the thermal conductivity, water vapor resistance factor, specific heat capacity, bulk density, and porosity were analyzed. The building envelope, to which the wood-based material is applied, should be designed to prevent moisture problems. The glulam construction can therefore be made very fire resistent fulfilling the authority’s demands to fire rated constructions.Cross-laminated timber (CLT), an engineering wood material prepared by bonding lamina in a vertical direction, is actively used in roofs, floors and shear walls of residential and commercial buildings, owing to its excellent structural stability, insulation performance, among other advantages. The carbonised layer gives protection to the core resulting in stability and predictability during a fire. Glulam constructions can therefore be made extremely fire safe and easily fulfil the standards concerning BD-constructions (fire resistant) set by the authorities. The carbonized layer protects the beam against further destruction from fire. Fire in a glulam beam goes out by itself unless the beam is directly exposed to flames. If the glulam is protected with a wood preservative combined with a good water-repellent surface treatment, it can be used for outdoor constructions.
Galvanized steel is frequently used and stainless steel, when required.Īll glulam is bonded with waterproof and weather-resistant glue unless anything else is speicified.
This is a substantial reason why swimming baths and warehouses for salt and fertilizer are often made of glulam and assembled with corrosion lasting metalwork and fixings. Glulam is naturally resilient to an aggressive chemical environment.
